CSynergy is a leadership program for classroom science and mathematics teachers designed to promote computational science to enhance inquiry-based learning in the classroom. The project focuses on creating a network of leaders in science and mathematics and facilitating the use of modeling and visualization tools in the classroom and developing a common language for mathematics and science.
Designed by NCSA's Computational Science Education Team and leading experts in the fields of modeling and visualization, CSynergy 2004 will present a variety of analytical approaches utilized in science and mathematics and will relate effective strategies for implementing concept-based modeling activities in the K-12 classroom. In addition, participants will engage in a cross-disciplinary learning continuum comprised of hands-on experiences and modeling exercises that speak to the standards and ensure the creation of more comprehensive science and mathematics curricula.
Partners include PASCO ( www.pasco.com ), the Illinois Science Teachers Association ( www.ista-il.org ) and the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics ( www.ictm.org ).
Funded in part by the following: EOT-PACI, National Science Foundation, and the Illinois Science Teachers Association through the National Science Teachers Association-ExxonMobil program, Building a Presence for Science.
Program Description
About Csynergy:
The CSynergy program for 2004 is cosponsored by the Illinois Science Teachers Association and the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics .
Participants in CSynergy will receive expert instruction by members of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications' Computational Science Education Team. The NCSA staff will facilitate 4 days of instruction and hands-on experiences to encourage the use of concept-based modeling activities in the K-12 classroom.
Program Goals:
- Enhance standards-based curricula by incorporating a cross-disciplinary approach to learning which utilizes modeling and visualization.
- Provide resources and training to develop teacher expertise in this approach, and build a repository of pertinent learning materials that can be readily implemented in the classroom.
- Create a network of science and mathematics leaders who have developed a common language and work collaboratively to further the integration of science and mathematics.
Representatives from the Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA) and the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) will help build the bridge between mathematics and science and facilitate future networking opportunities.
Participants will:
- Actively participate in the construction of standards-based curriculum materials which emphasize the links between mathematics and science and the benefits of using cross-disciplinary approaches.
- Learn how to facilitate the implementation of these curricula by combining research-based teaching methods with physical and computational modeling.
- Become part of a network of leaders who are integrating these approaches in their classrooms and are sharing their knowledge in an effort to instill conceptual understanding.
