The SC09 Education Program will take place Sat Nov 14 - Tue Nov 17 2009, in Portland, Oregon in conjunction with SC09 -- the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis.
Educators will participate in hands-on activities to engage them in
applying computational science, grid computing and/or high
performance computing resources to education.
During this November event, the SC09 Education Program will host
participants during a four-day intensive program that includes guided
tours of the SC09 exhibit hall, focused breakout sessions,
inspirational plenary speakers, a curriculum fair, birds-of-a-feather
gatherings, and priceless networking opportunities, all of which are
oriented specifically to meeting the needs of college and pre-college
educators.
Topics covered during this year's SC09 Education Program include:
computational thinking, parallel/distributed/grid computing,
computational chemistry, computational biology, computational physics
and curriculum development. Educators are encouraged to apply for the
conference as teams, hopefully including students, to help "seed"
computation into the local curriculum.
Housing, travel, conference registration and meal costs are provided
for participants. Once applicants have been selected to attend the
November event, they will be asked to pay a registration fee of $75
to cover food and materials, and also submit a $250 fully refundable
commitment deposit.
Participants should plan to arrive Fri Nov 13, because the Education
Program begins first thing Saturday, and plan their departure after
5:00 pm Tue Nov 17.
Since the conference is on the west coast we understand flights
out Tuesday evening may not be possible for some participants;
therefore, SC09 Education Program will cover your Tuesday evening
hotel.
Scholarships are available for those who are unable to cover the
$75 fee. The $250 fully refundable commitment deposit will be
returned to participants provided they have completed all
requirements as described by the SC09 Education Program Committee.
In addition, limited funds are available for pre-college school
districts to request reimbursement for substitute teacher pay.
Institutions interested in receiving substitute teacher pay need to
notify the SC09 Education Program Committee early in the application
process of their requested reimbursement amount.
The program is open to undergraduate faculty, undergraduate and
graduate students, and high school teachers. Educators from
undergraduate and graduate programs at Minority Serving Institutions,
including but not limited to Tribal Colleges and Universities,
Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and
Universities are strongly encouraged to apply.
